Tailored Opportunity: Postdoctoral research fellow at the African Climate and Development Initiative

What?

The African Climate and Development Initiative (ACDI) at the University of Cape Town (UCT) is developing its priority research themes in its second five-year Phase. ACDI is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (PDRF) who would grow research expertise and generate valuable outputs in a critically important area where there is a scarcity of African scholars.

The successful candidate will assist in research on the theme: Enhancing knowledge systems for climate resilience working to identify strengths and gaps in existing climate knowledge systems, diagnose their underlying reasons, and develop and test innovations to fill the gaps. This overarching theme is supported by expanding areas of research relating to Ecosystem Services and Livelihoods, Climate Services, Climate Change and Health, African Climate Risk, Water and Food Security in a Changing Climate, and Resilient Cities.

Value and Tenure of Award

  • The value of the Fellowship is R 205 000 per annum and is tenable for two years.
  • The Fellowship does not include any travel allowances, accommodation or other benefits.
  • Application for tax exemption will be made by the University.

 

Who?

pplicants should satisfy the following criteria:

  1. Postdoctoral research fellowships are only available to individuals who have achieved the doctoral degree within the past 5 years;
  2. Applicant may not previously have held full-time permanent professional or academic posts;
  3. No benefits or allowances are included in the value of the fellowship;
  4. The successful candidate will be required to comply with the policies and practices for the Postdoctoral Research Sector at the University of Cape Town; and
  5. The successful candidate will be required to register at the University of Cape town as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and will be expected to commence the required research at a mutually agreed date that is no later than 1 March  2018.
  6. Preference will be given to applicants who are able to demonstrate ability for independent study, research design and implementation, and writing skills in English.

Tailored opportunities: Short-term postdoctoral research fellowship-Scientific review of Ecosystem based adaptation

What?

The (African Climate & Development Initiative) ACDI is in the processing of developing its research strategy with regards to ecosystem based adaptation, in the broader context of UCT’s ecosystem services, livelihoods and climate change research.  This research strategy will support the ACDI to leverage funding to identify and address critical research gaps that need to be addressed to make EbA a viable adaption intervention/ strategy under different contextual settings throughout Africa, and to train the next generation of African researchers in this key area.

Who?

  • The candidate should be a PhD holder within the last five years with topics related to ecosystem services, climate change adaptation or integrated natural resources management, with demonstrated ability to produce peer-reviewed research articles, excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, desire to work in an interdisciplinary research setting

Benefit?

  • No benefits or allowances are included in the Fellowship, but the fellowship stipend is tax free.
  • The successful applicant will be required to register as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Cape Town immediately and will not be considered a UCT employee.
  • The value of the fellowship is ZAR 60 000 for 3 months.

he Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), The World Academy of Sciences Regional Office for sub-Saharan Africa (TWAS-ROSSA) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) are seeking candidates to participate in the inaugural regional training workshop on science diplomacy to be held in South Africa, from 21 to 25 May 2018.

Who?

his training workshop is designed for young scientists (below the age of 40) living and working in sub-Saharan Africa and whose research and wider engagement has brought them into the international policy-making arena, as well as policymakers and diplomats interested in some of the central science-based themes that might influence their work, and representatives from NGOs and other sectors working at the science-diplomacy interface. Applications are invited from young scientists (up to the age of 40), as well as scientists and/or government officials, etc., with more experience in the policy making arena (‘science diplomacy ambassadors’).
