The Chair of Environmental Economics, Regulatory and Consumer Policy at the Institute of Economics of the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart / Germany invites applications for a position as PhD or Postdoc within the framework of the research project PIRAT (Process Improvement for Resource-oriented (material-, nutrient- and energy-efficient) Treatment Systems) starting 01.11.2018 or later. The position is limited until 31.08.2021. The salary will be paid according to TV-L E13 (100%).
The interdisciplinary joint Chinese-German research project PIRAT is based on a resource-oriented approach towards wastewater treatment which aims at the recovery of valuable wastewater components like phosphorus and a reduction of the energy consumption of wastewater treatment plants. The overall goal of the project is closing the material and nutrient cycles while maintaining an extremely good cleaning performance of wastewater treatment plants and the improvement of the environmental situation (climate protection, reduction of emissions and protection of water, air, and soil).
The position offered here will be part of the economic subproject “Assessment of the social benefits from PIRAT systems” which aims at the economic assessment of the social benefits accruing from the recovery of phosphorus from sewage sludge in PIRAT systems. The recovery of phosphorus from sewage sludge reduces the scarcity of this non-renewable resource and allows the production of non-contaminated fertilizer, which will improve environmental quality (soil, groundwater etc.) and reduce the hazard from contaminated agricultural products to human health. For the assessment of the resulting social benefits an exemplary Contingent Valuation study as well as choice experiments will be conducted in Shanghai.
Applicants should have an accredited Master’s degree in Economics or related fields (grade: good or better) and should be fluent in English language. A good command of German language is desirable and a basic knowledge of Chinese is advantageous since part of the research has to be done in China. Willingness to work in an international and interdisciplinary team is expected.
- Participation in the conception and implementation of welfare economic valuation studies in China
- Evaluation of survey results and data analysis
- Cooperating in the joint publication of the project results and presentation at international conferences
- Writing a PhD thesis (if applicable)
Women are particularly invited to submit their applications. Applications of disabled persons with a comparable qualification will be considered as priority.
