At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience a position as postdoc in Ecology is open for appointment from the 1 April 2018 or soon thereafter. The fully funded position is available for a period of 2.5 year. The Department consists of five sections of which three are situated in Aalborg with research and teaching in Biology, Biotechnology, Applied Chemistry and Environmental Technology, one in Esbjerg on Chemical Engineering and one in Copenhagen on Sustainable Biotechnology. The position is located within the section of Biology and Environmental Science with working place in Aalborg. The Section of Biology and Environmental Science at Aalborg University is currently developing progressively. Several academic staff members have recently joined the section, we have experienced a large increase in the number of biology students, and our section moved to brand new office and laboratory facilities in 2015.
Many species are expected to alter their current geographical range due to climate changes, and natural communities will consequently change in both species composition and internal organization as interaction partners are lost and new ones are gained. The current project aims to quantify how climate driven re-distributions impact entire species interaction networks. Specifically, the candidate will merge network ecology with species distribution modelling and work with Ficus species and their frugivores as a model system. The candidate will participate in all aspects of the project including acquisition of data from the literature, modelling, data analysis, writing etc. Note that the position does NOT entail fieldwork.
The selected candidate will become a member of the Section of Biology and Environmental Science, and, besides working closely with the PI (Kristian Trøjelsgaard), also benefit from a fruitful collaboration with Associate Professor W. Daniel Kissling (Amsterdam University), and Assistant Professor Brody Sandel (Santa Clara University). Close interaction with collaborators will be facilitated through visits to both Amsterdam University and Santa Clare University.
The position is a research position but the candidate should expect to become involved in some project based teaching within the section. All educational programs at Aalborg University are based on Problem Based Learning, with projects making up half the teaching load at all semesters. For more information see http://www.bio.aau.dk
The position requires a candidate with strong competencies in ecology or macroecology, excellent analytical skills, and proficiency in R (or equivalent). Experience with either ecological network analysis and/or species distribution modelling is highly advantageous.
Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory, and preference will be given to candidates with an excellent publication and citation record.
Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.
