Tailored opportunities: PhD Scholarships in Sustainability Sciences at Stockholm Resilience Center

What?

The Stockholm Resilience Center seeks to recruit a motivated PhD student in Sustainability Science, to join an industry-collaboration research project combining concepts of circular economy and planetary boundaries. The project’s focus is on the textile fibres industry. The PhD student will amongst other things:

  • Analyse the circular economy framework from a social-ecological system resilience perspective in order to integrate with the planetary boundaries concept
  • Explore how to translate the planetary boundaries concept to the operating scale of the textile industry, considering the implications of circular economy for individual fibre types.
  • Evaluate the biophysical and socioeconomic implications of different fibre systems to inform fibre replacement and shifts to more sustainable production and trade patterns.

Who?

The PhD student doing this project will need the following qualifications:

  • Good foundations in sustainability science, environmental science and/or economics, preferably with experience in ecological economics, life cycle assessment, or resource efficiency analysis.
  • Knowledge of sustainable fashion and the textile sector is desirable.
  • Prepared and motivated to explore different areas and acquire knowledge and skills within the social and environmental sciences.
  • Ready to collaborate with and benefit from other researchers with diverse interests and perspectives.
  • Expected to spend short periods of time a the UK Headquarters of the principal project partner – the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
